CASTAWAY ISLAND MARSHLANDS - Gary Garrett Acrylic Painting Demo

This is a studio painting 9x12 painted Oct 18, 2008 from a photo I shot at our (First Coast Plein Air Painters) paintout last spring at Castaway Island (Just off the Intracoastal Waterway in Jacksonville, Florida, geo:lat=30.296123950482314 geo:lon=-81.43103957176208) using Winsor & Newton Finity acrylics and a tube of Golden's OPEN burnt sienna. I used a retarding fluid along with the OPEN burnt sienna & ultramarine blue to extend the drying time of the acrylics and get a more "oil-like" underpainting. Towards the end, I used a gloss acrylic varnish to thin the colors creating transparent glaze coats to deepen tones in the painting. Total painting time was about 2.5 hours.

The music is by Karunesh from the "Nirvana Cafe" CD, Track 06, "Revelry" which can be purchased and downloaded at My recordings of bird songs gathered over many paintouts has also been mixed in via the voice-over track.
