Painting PARIS 1: The Underdrawing by David Gray

Here's step one for me in virtually every painting I do. Avoiding unnecessary detail, I execute a simple but accurate contour drawing into which I will eventually lay my underpainting. This drawing is done with vine charcoal of medium hardness. You may also notice that I like to wrap some tape around it so that it will fit into a pencil extender.
